The OpenDocument Text format, benefits, and users
The OpenDocument Format (ODF) is both an OASIS (Organization for the Advancement of Structured Information Standards) and an ISO/IEC international standard. It is a ZIP-compressed XML-based file format.
The OpenDocument Text file format (ODT) is the ODF extension for word processing documents.
ODT is prevalent for individuals and organizations that don’t want or cannot, for licensing, pricing, or even ideological reasons, use Microsoft Word.
The Library of Congress Recommended Formats Statement (RFS) 2015-2016 includes ODF (ISO/IEC 26300) as an acceptable format for textual works in digital form, and ODT is found in their list of format descriptions for text.
According to the Library of Congress website, governments from The United Kingdom, Portugal, Norway, Brazil, and several other South American nations, as well as various archival institutions around the world and the European Commission have adopted the ODF family of formats as mandatory or recommended for editable documents.
Policy documents that include ODF among acceptable formats for exchange of editable documents with governments include the German Standards and Architecture for e-Government Applications (SAGA), the eGovernment in Denmark, and the RGI (Référentiel Général d’Interopérabilité) in France.
